Impact of sepsis on the dynamics of diaphragmatic function in patients under mechanical ventilation

چکیده
Methods We prospectively included mechanically ventilated patients of a 16-beds medical intensive care unit. Diaphragmatic function was estimated by the gold standard method using bilateral anterior magnetic stimulation (Ptr,stim) at two distinct time points: 1) during the first 24 hours of mechanical ventilation and 2) in the 24 hours after switching to spontaneous ventilation mode. Sepsis was defined according to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign criteria. A Ptr,stim lower than -11 cmH2O defined DD.

Diaphragmatic dysfunction in the intensive care unit: caught in the cross-fire between sepsis and mechanical ventilation
Accumulating evidence indicates that diaphragmatic weakness is common and frequently severe in mechanically ventilated patients. Supinski and Callahan now report that infection is a major risk factor for diaphragmatic weakness in this patient population. Importantly, they show that patients with the greatest levels of diaphragmatic dysfunction have a much poorer prognosis in terms of more prolo...
متن کاملThe relationship of serum vitamin D level with the outcome in surgical intensive care unit patients
The aim of this study was to assess the correlation of serum vitamin D with ICU length of stay, mortality rate, length of mechanical ventilation, and incidence of sepsis. We conducted a descriptive analytic study on 793 patients admitted to surgical ICU wards in northwest of Iran from March 2015 to March 2016. Patients were assessed during the ICU stay and the following data were collect...

Abstract Aim. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of protocol of weaning from mechanical ventilation on the gastrointestinal function in people undergoing CABG. Background. The most common problems after cardiac surgery in the intensive care unit are change in vital signs, respiratory problems, unsuccessful separation from mechanical ventilation, and gastrointestinal problems. Due t...
متن کاملSepsis risk factors in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia
BACKGROUND Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a rare congenital anomaly and remains among the most challenging ICU-managed disease. Beside severe pulmonary hypertension, lung hypoplasia and major abdominal surgery, infective complications remain major determinants of outcome. However, the specific incidence of sepsis as well as associated risk factors is unknown. METHODS This prospectiv...
